Rubén López

Professor at the Department of Cell Biology, Physiology and Immunology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Spain. He obtained his BSc in Biology from the University of Girona in 2001 and received his PhD in Neuroscience from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 2005. He completed a postdoctoral period at McGill University in Canada (2006-2009) and returned to the UAB in 2009 as a full professor in the Department of Cell Biology, Physiology and Immunology. In 2014, he obtained the position of Associate Professor at the UAB and was promoted to Full Professor in 2019. He is also linked to the CIBERNED and RICORS research networks. The main objective of his research is to study the contribution of inflammation to tissue damage after spinal cord injury and to other neurological conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia. In particular, his research focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms that mediate the detrimental aspects of macrophage and microglia activation, as well as on understanding the events that prevent the resolution of inflammation in central nervous system disorders. Indeed, he has recently presented novel findings on the crucial role of different mediators in the initiation and resolution of the inflammatory response after spinal cord injury. Over the past five years, Dr. López-Vales has received funding from various national, European and international agencies, including CaixaImpulse grants and the La Caixa Foundation Health Research Programmes. This has allowed Dr. López-Vales to have a solid track record in the scientific field, with 61 publications, many of them in high-impact SCI journals, such as Brain, Annals of Neurology, PNAS, Theranostics, Journal of Neuroscience, Brain Behavior and Immunity, among others. His H-index is 35. His research has also led to 6 patents, two of which are currently in the national phase and in preclinical development. In addition, Dr. López-Vales has supervised 9 doctoral theses and 5 master's theses. Based on his scientific achievements in the last five years, Dr. López-Vales has recently been awarded an ICREA Academia scholarship.
