Montserrat Bernabeu is a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and has worked at the Institut Guttmann since 1993. She was the head of the Brain Injury Unit from 1997 to 2018 and since then she was Care Director of both the Neurorehabilitation Hospital located in Badalona, and the Brain Health Institute in the city of Barcelona. Now she is Co-director of the Institut Guttmann Foundation.

She graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona, later specialising in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She was president of the Spanish Neurorehabilitation Society (SENR) from 2005 and a member of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM).

As a researcher, she has taken part in numerous European projects related to new technologies in rehabilitation and was the director of the ICF TBI Core Sets Project (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health to define Main Indicators in the treatment of traumatic brain injury) carried out with the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich, Germany.
