1st Youth Ability Camp of the Institut Guttmann
he Youth Ability Camp, the first pediatric campus organized by the Institut Guttmann, was held from June 25 to 28, 2019, and there were 16 young people between 10 and 18 years old, all of them patients of the Institut Guttmann with acquired brain damage and cerebral palsy. On the Campus, in addition to enjoying sports and cultural activities such as the visit to the Natural Sciences Museum, tennis, paddle surfing, volleyball, etc., young people have worked on therapeutic aspects related to cognitive rehabilitation such as memory, planning tasks, organizing and activities of daily life.
The base has been at the Barcelona International Sailing Center and the various activities have been done at the Parc del Fòrum, the Royal Polo Club of Barcelona, the Natural Sciences Museum of Barcelona and the Club Natació Atlètic Barceloneta. In all of them, and during the 4 days the patients have been accompanied by physical education teachers, neuropsychologists and physiotherapists from the Institut Guttmann and the Sunnass Hospital of Norway along with other experienced instructors, Master's students at the Institute University of the Institut Guttmann Institute and former patients of the hospital with sequels of cerebral damage.
This has been a new initiative of success, and has been supported by the Johan Cruyff Foundation. It has been a very exciting way to raise the taste of these young people with disabilities in physical practice, with the aim of continuing it after the rehabilitation process has been completed so that they have good health and quality of life. That's one of the main objectives of the Institut Guttmann as a social initiative entity.
