5th September, Spinal Cord Injury Day
The Institut Guttmann is celebrating, today 5th September, the Spinal Cord Injury Day, an international day to increase awareness and knowledge of this type of injury among citizens.
This year the specific theme is: "Spinal cord injury in conflicts and disasters, how to prepare and prevent", with the aim of raising awareness of the difficulties that people with spinal cord injury have to face in the areas. In relation to this issue, the Institut Guttmann has published a recent report in Sobre Ruedas magazine, which we invite you to read here.
The Institut Guttmann, Neurorehabilitation hospital, is a National Reference Center -CSUR- in Spain, and the only one in Catalonia, for the treatment of complex Spinal Cord Injury, by the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality. As a highly specialized hospital, it treats more than 5,000 patients with disabilities of neurological origin each year.
During the year 2021, we treated a total of 1661 people affected by paraplegia or quadriplegia due to a spinal cord injury, and we received 135 new people admitted for this reason and in an initial state of the injury.
