The Institut Guttmann, center of high expertise in the treatment of spinal cord patients with nerve transposition surgery of the quadriplegic hand
On Wednesday, September 21st, the Institut Guttmann performed a nerve transposition surgery at the Neurorehabilitation Hospital located in Badalona to improve the functionality of the quadriplegic patient's hand. This neuro-orthopedic surgery allows the transfer of a preserved nerve to another nerve located below the area of the spinal cord injury in order to recover the original function of the muscles that depend on this nerve, facilitating the movements of the hand and that these are more natural. It is estimated that 50% of patients with quadriplegia can benefit from this type of surgery.
The intervention, which complements the extensive portfolio of services as a hospital specializing in neurorehabilitation, is added to the highly complex procedures already available at the Guttmann Institute as the only CSUR Center in Catalonia in the treatment of patients with injuries medullary complex.
The Institut Guttmann adds this intervention to other innovative surgical techniques such as the implantation of diaphragmatic pacemakers in the quadriplegic patient with mechanical ventilation, the SARS system for stimulation of the sacral roots that allows the control of sphincters in the spinal cord patient ·lar or the placement of baclofen pumps to control spasticity.
In the last 10 years, the Institut Guttmann, which specializes in neuro-orthopedic surgery, has performed 156 quadriplegic hand surgeries, 41 diaphragmatic pacemaker implant surgeries and 144 SARS implants.
