Neurotechnology and neurorehabilitation at the XXXI Technical Symposia of the Institut Guttmann
On October 30, Palau Macaya de Barcelona hosted a new edition of the Technical Symposia of the Institut Guttmann, which talked about technological development to optimize the benefit of neurorehabilitation through more intensive, more efficient interventions, more Personalized and with a higher level of evidence.
The act started with the institutional welcome by Dr. Montserrat Bernabeu, assistant director of the Institut Guttmann, and by Mr. Àngel Font, Corporate Director of Research and Strategy of the "la Caixa" Foundation.
In front of a full capacity, the master lecture was given by Dr. Ander Ramos, leader of the neuroprotective group at the Institute of Medical Psychology and Neurobiology of Behavior at the University of Tübingen as well as director of Neurotecnologia of Tecnalia. Dr. Ramos spoke of neurotecnologia for neurorehabilitation, exposed the current models of rehabilitation after suffering from stroke as well as the progress in the processes and organization to transfer to the clinical practice the new advances. Finally, he presented results of the use of neuronal interfaces in rehabilitation and how neuro-technology can change the present and future of rehabilitation.
Later, Dr. Ramos moderated the round table "How do we build the neuro-rehabilitation of the future?", where we talk about robotic systems, robotic exoesquelets, virtual reality, and how big data can help create new scenarios for neurorehabilitation. The table had the participation of Dr. Úrsula Costa (Hocoma), Dr. Josep M. Font (UPC and Able Human Motion), Dr. Álvaro Pascual-Leone (Harvard and BBHI), Dr. Mariano Alcañiz (European Lab of Neurotecnologías Inmerisvas, UPV), Dr. Gerardo Conesa (HM, Mar and Sant Pau hospitals) and Dr. Artur Serra (i2cat).
After lunch, the second round table on non-invasive brain and spinal stimulation took place, which was moderated by Dr. Joan Vidal, in which Dr. Raúl Pelayo, Dr. Josep M. Tormos and the Dra. Hatice Kumru, all of them experts from the Institut Guttmann, presented different scenarios of non-invasive brain stimulation. Dr. Guillermo García (UAB) also presented the advances in non-invasive spinal stimulation.
This edition of the Technical Symposia invited us to make a profound reflection on the paradigm shift in the rehabilitation and the new opportunities that are open to neuroscience professionals and especially in the lives of our patients and their patients families In addition, one more year the conference had a great success of assistance with a full capacity and a great participation by the public.
