A young quadriplegic regain control of a hand because of a neural bypass with a chip on his brain that sends signals to muscles that control the movement. This is a step further on a research in what also the Institut Guttmann is working, with projects like Brainable, WAY and BNCI 2020.
The scientific magazine Nature publishes an article about the implant of a neural bypass on a quadriplegic patient that has a spinal injury for six years. Because of that, and thanks to a chip on his brain and some electrodes on his arm, he has regained the mobility of his hand. The brain sends, in that way, signals to muscles that control the hand, directly, avoiding the point where de spinal cord is sectioned.
Dr. Vidal, Dr. Tormos and Dr. Opisso have expressed opinion about this surgical intervention on mass media, like La Vanguardia o the public television, TV3, because the Institut Guttmann has been working in this kind of research for a long time, with projects like Brainable, WAY and BNCI 2020. The diference is that this projects work on non-invasive strategies to capture brain electrical signals in peoplewith disabilities in order to control electronic devices.
